A different approach to a well-known classic musical can sometimes bring forth new appreciation for the material and provide theatrical flair. This production of is a major rethinking and scaling down of the material. Director Souza's approach creates a unique and fresh view of the material, and is lively, fun, and off beat.

Astutely conceived with inspired direction by Alan Souza, “Oliver!” doesn’t begin in the traditional confines of a workhouse with a throng of hungry orphans. In Souza’s innovative landscape, the Dickensian London setting is Christmas Eve 1838 in a modest British pub……Souza’s fresh, communal approach doesn’t produce a dull moment and is consistently arresting. It’s extremely exciting and rare to see a director reinterpret a tried and true product with intimate boldness.

Human Race Theatre Company has a winner in “Oliver!” I went into this production a skeptic. “Ugh, another production of ‘Oliver.' However, this one is different. Director Alan Souza takes us in an entirely new direction. The performance simply holds you in its grasp from beginning to end. The action doesn’t stop. This is a production that is not to be missed.
